Retaining Women Physicians: Halting the Exodus

Diane W. Shannon, MD, MPH, PCC

Practicing medicine has become more stressful in recent years. Burnout rates have soared, as have intent-to-leave and turnover rates. Women physicians have higher rates of burnout than their male colleagues and are more likely to cut back or leave in the earliest years of practice. Whether due to implicit bias, the motherhood penalty, or the greater load of domestic tasks, this phenomenon threatens the sustainability of every healthcare facility in this country as more women enter medical school than men.

In this presentation, Dr. Shannon will explore some of the deeper drivers of these data and will suggest specific strategies that leaders and managers can implement to support improved retention of women physicians, and by extension, all clinicians. At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the drivers of higher burnout and early-career attrition rates in women physicians
  • Describe how gender role expectations affect women in medicine
  • Identify strategies to support the retention of women physicians
