Medical Director Sutter Health Experience of Care
Philip Adam Dodd, M.D. is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist who has practiced with Gould Medical Group (GMG) in San Joaquin County for more than three decades. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Dodd serves as Medical Director of Experience of Care, Assistant Medical Director of Quality, Co-Chair of the GMG Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Section Chief for Stockton OB/GYN. Through these leadership roles, he provides strategic oversight for patient experience, clinical quality, provider engagement, and healthcare delivery across the Greater Central Valley Division and the broader Sutter Health system.
Dr. Dodd has led numerous initiatives focused on advancing quality, safety, patient experience, and workforce well-being. His leadership contributed to successful AAAHC accreditation efforts and helped guide the evolution of communication and relationship-centered care programs, including the adoption and spread of Relationship-Centered Care (RC2) principles throughout the region. He has also supported transformational work related to patient experience measurement, provider coaching, and culture improvement.
Working in partnership with organizational and physician leaders, Dr. Dodd helped pilot and expand the Empathetics® program, a nationally recognized initiative designed to strengthen empathy, communication, and human connection in healthcare. The program demonstrated meaningful improvements in patient experience, provider and staff engagement, and physician well-being, with outcomes presented at national conferences including AMGA, NRC Health, and The Beryl Institute. More recently, he has helped lead system and regional efforts focused on experience of care, healthcare equity, leader development, workforce retention, ambulatory quality improvement, and women’s health strategy.
Known for his collaborative leadership style and commitment to people-centered care, Dr. Dodd leverages his clinical expertise, compassion, and operational experience to advance excellence in quality, safety, patient experience, provider satisfaction, inclusion, and belonging. He remains dedicated to creating environments where patients, physicians, advanced practice clinicians, and care teams can thrive while delivering exceptional healthcare outcomes.
